Video of the Day: Bird-repelling drone clears property of unwelcome pests

The ProHawk UAV can be programmed to follow a specific flight path, and it stores a range of predator calls

Oftentimes scarecrows or other intimidating props are placed on the ground to deter birds within a certain radius, but one company is looking at a different tactic to keep the feathered flocks away. Designed to resemble a bird of prey, the ProHawk UAV can be programmed to autonomously fly over a property and emit menacing predatory cries while in flight.

Created by pest control company, Bird-X, the ProHawk UAV is fitted with GPS and can be programmed to follow a specific flight path along waypoints. It features a built-in sonic sound unit that stores a range of predator calls, prey bird distress cries, and Canada goose cries, which are emitted to clear the area of unwanted pests.

According to Bird-X, the drone’s body is crafted from robust carbon fiber, designed to mimic the appearance of a real-life predator bird. Users can control it with a handheld remote control, but its potential to cut work hours by way of automated flight is where its value lies. Camera options are also available, including recorded or live feed video, allowing the user to get a real bird’s eye view.

“We’ve all seen drones in the news with uses ranging from surveillance to package delivery,” said national account manager at Bird-X, Stuart Wilkins. “We’ve been using drones for years to keep birds out of unwanted areas, but never before has something this advanced been developed exclusively for the purpose of bird control.”

Although the drone is capable of launching, patrolling, and landing on its own, it still needs to be plugged in to charge. The ProHawk UAV is currently available for purchase.

Bird-X has spent over 50 years protecting public areas from over 60 bird-spread transmissible diseases. The leading international brand of humane bird control solutions, the Chicago-based company manufactures a complete line of unique bird control products, protecting the health of humans, wildlife, and the environment by deterring birds from unwanted areas without harming them.
