Good news—that antique television set neatly discarded in the corner of your basement doesn’t have to stay useless. With a little bit of DIY elbow grease you can transform long forgotten analog gadgets into the ultimate in vintage-style hipster home accessories: a Chromecast retro streaming machine.

According to Youtube user Dr. Moddnstine , you’ll first need to convert a 300 ohm twin lead attached to an old rabbit ear antenna into a 75 ohm VHF and attach that to an RF modulator that outputs composite video. From there, a standard composite-to-HDMI converter will provide the interface needed to link the Chromecast. Throw in a Wi-Fi signal and you’re set. No soldering necessary.

Dr. Moddnstine offers a more thorough explanation in his demo, which you’ll find here . Although he does omit the part about wiring the internal components that make the unit automatically turn once the streaming begins—presumably because of how dangerous it is to fiddle around inside the guts of an analog television. That’s all optional anyway.

Once you’ve got the device up and running, Chromecast will operate as normal, allowing you curate video and audio content remotely. The only difference is now you’ve a retro-filter smothering your content.
