Video of the Day: Man builds robot resembling Scarlett Johansson

The process cost $50,000 and took a year and a half.

Hong Kong designer Ricky Ma designed and built a robot that looks just like the award-winning actress, Scarlett Johansson. Deemed Mark 1, the robot took Ma eighteen months and over $50,000 to complete; much of the construction took place on his patio with a 3D printer and software that he taught himself how to use.

He adopted a trial-and-error method, where he encountered obstacles that ranged from burnt out electric motors to the robot losing balance and toppling over.

“When you look at everything together, it was really difficult,” said Ma, who had to master unfamiliar topics like electromechanics and programming along the way, while also learning how to fit the robot's external skin over its components.

The robot is composed of silicon skin, dark blonde hair, liquid eyes, and can produce animated facial expressions, such as smiling and winking. She can move her arms and legs and even responds when you compliment her.

While the rise of robots and artificial intelligence continues to grow, we have to ask just one question about Ma’s project: If a man can’t get the attention of a woman he is infatuated with, is it acceptable for him to build a robot that looks exactly like her? Sure, people create wax replicas of famous people all the time, but the difference is that Mark 1 moves, smiles, and winks.

What do you think? Is the robot creepy or cute?
