Vista-compliant Class D audio subsystems are industry’s first

ICs consume 36% less board space and 37% less supply current than the competition

The MAX9791/MAX9792 Class D audio-subsystem ICs are offered as the industry’s first Windows Vista-compliant audio-subsystem ICs for notebook computers, while also providing 36% less board space and 37% less power than competitive solutions. Housed in single 4 x 4-mm packages, the parts integrate a stereo 2 W (for the MAX9791) or mono 3 W (for the MAX9792) Class D speaker amplifier, a stereo DirectDrive headphone amplifier, and a 120-mA LDO regulator.

The Class D speaker amplifier extends battery life and eases PCB thermal-design constraints. The headphone amplifier employs the company’s DirectDrive technology, which produces a ground-referenced output from a single supply and eliminates the need for bulky and expensive dc-blocking capacitors, while improving bass response and minimizing audio distortion. To further improve headphone performance, the MAX9791/MAX9792 incorporate ground-sense circuitry at the headphone jack, which further enhances crosstalk performance and rejects ground-loop-induced noise at the output jack.

Both devices are fully specified over the −40° to 85°C extended temperature range, and are available in a space-saving 28-pin TQFN package. (From $0.98 ea/1,000 — available now.)
