Vitesse Enters the FTTP Market with the Industry's Most Integrated Burst Mode Laser Driver

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS) reaffirmed its leadership in the opto-electronic component market today by announcing the availability of the VSC7965, an integrated burst mode laser driver and limiting amplifier, specifically developed for Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) optical networking units (ONU). The VSC7965 has unmatched versatility and on-chip functionality, reducing development time and the material costs of FTTP systems.

Universal Optical Access Solution Sets the Industry Benchmark for Cost Savings and Functionality

According to LIGHTCOUNTING, a transceiver market research company, FTTP is one of the fastest growing optical market segments. “Sales of FTTP modules jumped from $17M in the first half of 2004 to more than $50M in the second half of the year,” said Dr. Vladimir Kozlov, founder of the research firm.

Passive Optical Networks (PON) are the dominant technology being used for FTTP networks. The multiple versions of PON that are being deployed throughout the world have forced manufacturers to develop multiple circuit solutions to support each market segment, disrupting the ability to leverage the economies of scale. The flexibility of VSC7965 allows manufacturers to develop a universal circuit design, supporting APON/BPON (ITU-T G.983.x), EPON (IEEE 802.3ah), and GPON (ITU-T G.984.x) applications up to 2.5 Gbps.
