Vitesse Unites Power-over-Ethernet and Voice-over-IP to Usher In New Era of Convergence

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS), a leader in Gigabit Ethernet, today announced the availability of the powerHawX™ Gigabit Reference System for Power-over-Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af) enabled Voice-over-IP. The reference system, along with the powerHawX Software Development Kit enables a new world of networked appliances, allowing IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, security cameras and other appliances to receive power as well as data over existing LAN cabling without needing to modify the existing Ethernet infrastructure or having to install additional power lines.

Reference System Integrates Voice, Video, Data, and Power with True Global Standard for Network Appliances

The notion of power and data existing on the same cable infrastructure is new to the LAN, but has existed for analog telephones for well over 100 years. With Power-over-Ethernet, enterprises can now create a Voice-over-IP (VoIP) infrastructure using an integrated network capable of voice, video, data, and power, providing the first true global standard for power distribution to networked appliances.

By delivering power on the same cabling infrastructure as data, deployment cost is significantly reduced while reliability is significantly increased. This infrastructure scheme also lends itself to the installation of a central UPS backup system. The powerHawX Gigabit Reference System demonstrates the streamlining of these convergence connections and enables customers to develop and verify real world applications rapidly.
