China-based company Vivio just announced the construction of the Vivio Xplay 3S, the first smartphone equipped with a 2k HD screen and 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, more pixels than a full-sized iPad. Vivio has so far not released other details, such as price and when the phone will actually be released.
The smartphone’s pixels will be driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and tech experts suspect that the Quad HD will use an LG-developed 5.5-inch display panel, translating roughly to 538 pixels per inch (ppi).
Xplay Phone
While some have claimed that there is essentially no benefit to going past 300 ppi, the point at which the human eye can no longer discern individual pixels, screens such as the HTC One already exist that go far beyond normal “retina” resolution — and Vivio’s new phone further pushes that boundary. If nothing else, the Quad HD proves that increasing screens to this size and display resolution is possible, a feat that will delight technology buffs regardless of the phone’s actual impact or usefulness.
There are several benefits to creating a phone or screen with more pixels. Firstly, the abundance of pixels will increase the phone’s usability at closer viewing distances. It will also increase the quality of external displays, while it will favor mobile apps over desktop monitors and TV screens.
However, bigger isn’t always better. More pixels means less battery life and far less processing ability than our current smartphones, a trade-off some may not be prepared to make. While Vivio’s new project is sure to make other major phone companies sit up and take notice, we’ll have to wait and see as to its actual impact on technology and screen development.
