Wall of dead batteries used to charge dead smartphones

Ad campaign finds unique source of power

Well, here’s something you don’t read every day — an ad campaign that’s actually doing the local public some good. Vitamilk, a popular brand of soymilk in Thailand, working with global ad agency BBDO’s Proximity Thailand, has created the Vitamilk Recharge Station “Dead Batteries for Dead Batteries” — a wall of dead, thrown-away batteries being used together to tap into their otherwise leftover power.

The point of it this campaign is to reflect Vitamilk’s belief that there’s always enough power leftover within to recharge. As illuminating as that might be, what’s more interesting is how this campaign has figured out a way to use the public’s indifference to wasted energy and turn it into something good.

Pile of dead batteries

Most people throw away a battery as soon as the device it’s supposed to be powering begins to show signs of not working properly.

Low battery

In general, it is believed that each battery thrown away has, more or less, 500 mAh of power remaining.
Not a lot, but untapped power nonetheless.

When you combine the leftover power of one battery with another . . . and another . . . and another, you can actually create a pretty legit source of power. And that’s exactly what the Vitamilk / BBDO folks did. The signboard they created can hold up to 1,500 batteries at a time, which translates to approximately 150,000 mAh of power, or enough juice to fully-charge 140 smartphones.
