At LEGO World 2014 in Copenhagen, the third edition of the CubeStormer robot was unveiled, solving the Rubik’s Cube at a lightning pace.
To run smoothly, the robot uses a Samsung Galaxy S3 and eight LEGO Mindstorms EV3 programming blocks with a variety of other LEGO Mindstormes kit products. The Rubik’s Cube is placed on top of the device and then engulfed by its mechanical counterparts. This robot has internal cameras to capture each side of the Rubik’s Cube to determine where the colors are located. This data is used to calculate the exact number of moves required to solve the Cube. All sides of the Cube are spun rapidly around to solve the puzzle in its entirety.
The LEGO Mindstormes kit bricks are intelligent and programmable, powered by AA batteries. It runs a Linux operating system on an ARM-centered processor. The screen on the blocks is a monochrome LCD. There is an added SD card slot on all Mindstormes to expand the memory capacity and a USB port to add Wi-Fi connectivity.
This Rubik’s Cube solving robot was created by Mike Dobson and David Gilday. It is faster than the previous 5.3-second record set by CubeStormer II. The Cubestormer III takes under 3 seconds to solve the puzzle, and has been acknowledged as the fastest nonhuman Rubik’s Cube solver in the world.
