Waterproof pressure sensor targets industrial IoT

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new waterproof MEMS pressure sensor for industrial IoT under the company’s 10-year longevity program.

STMicroelectronics has claimed the market’s first MEMS water/liquid-proof absolute pressure sensor, targeting the industrial IoT market, with a 10-year longevity program. The ILPS28QSW waterproof pressure sensor is housed in a sealed, cylindrical, surface-mountable package. Applications include gas and water metering equipment, weather monitors, air-conditioning smart filters and home appliances.

The MEMS pressure sensor features a ceramic substrate that provides high resistance to liquid permeability and a potting gel, proven in automotive applications, to protect the internal circuitry. The high-grade surgical steel lid is sealed with an O-ring and secured with epoxy adhesive. This package design ensures an ingress-protection rating of IP58 to withstand immersion in over one meter of water, certified according to IEC 60529 and ISO 20653. In addition, the sensor can sustain up to 10 bar over-pressure.

Key specifications include absolute pressure reading accuracy to 0.5 hPa, selectable dual full-scale range of 260-1260 hPa and 260-4060h Pa, operating current as low as 1.7 µA and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 105°C.

The ILPS28QSW also features the company’s Qvar electrostatic-charge sensing channel that enables developers to create additional value in their applications through features such as liquid leakage detection and combined with the pressure signal enables monitoring of both liquid level and even the tiniest of leaks in home appliances and industrial processes, said ST.

The ILPS28QSW also integrates digital features that simplify system design and management. These include temperature compensation, FIFO memory and an I2C/MIPI-I3C digital communication interface. The output data rate is selectable from 1 Hz to 200 Hz.

The ILPS28QSW is in production now. The sensor is priced from $3.00 for orders of 1,000 pieces.
