‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign will run only on solar energy

Last week, all tech eyes were on Las Vegas as it hosted the enormous International Consumer Electronics Show.

Now, thanks to some funding from the Consumer Electronics Association and other donors, Las Vegas will again draw the attention of technology buffs as it begins to power its famous welcome sign with solar energy.

Solar Power Vegas Sign

The giant “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign will be powered by three solar trees with a total of 18 photovoltaic cells.

“We’re planting solar trees at one of the most photographed spots on earth.  It’s difficult to make a bigger statement about our commitment to sustainability than at the ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign,” said County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak.

“The International CES is proud to call Las Vegas home, and CEA is committed to helping Las Vegas be green,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA.

Solar powering the sign helps demonstrate Nevada’s commitment to harnessing clean energy resources for the existing economy.

So next time you’re at CES or just stopping in Vegas for a visit, check out The Strip’s most iconic landmark’s legendary neon and incandescent lights that run solely on harnessed solar energy.

The project is headed by the Green Chips and Clean Energy Project nonprofit organizations.
