What you can see at Mobile World Congress 2013

Mobile World Congress (MWC) starts Monday February 25 and goes on till February 28. It is held in Barcelona, Spain, at the new location of Fira Gran Via. Anything you need to know about mobile — from innovation, new applications to products and components — you can find at this event. Last year about 67,000 attended MWC and was noted as a record-breaking year. This year they expect over 70,000 attendees. The theme for this year's MWC is “The New Mobile Horizon.”

MWC2013

Some MWC product announcements and demos to look out for, include:

Sierra Wireless (Hall 6 Stand 6MR69) will announce a major M2M development that streamlines the integration of wireless M2M communications into any application.

Maxim Integrated (Hall 6 Stand 6G100) will be there as well, and they will be demonstrating its leadership in analog integration through a variety of demos geared towards smart phones, tablets, and the radio access network. Here you will see some highly differentiated, integrated mobile and communications demos: 3G/LTE femtocell RF transceiver, Kindle Fire with ambient light sensing, Broadband interference demo, Wide frequency range synthesizer, Smartphone IR blaster for remote control, Quad core power demo, MEMS gyroscope robot battle, TINI power SoC, RGB and ambient light sensors, Functional systems with ADB/SW tools showcase, Mini docking station.

Mindspeed (Hall 7 – E104) will be showcasing a wide variety of small cell products from different customers with the latest technology for residential, enterprise, metro and rural deployments. This is a unique opportunity to see small cell base stations for all the 3GPP standards: HSPA+, TD-SCDMA, LTE FDD, and TD-LTE — as well as Integrated Small cell + WiFI (ISW). Live demonstrations include the latest Mindspeed T33xx dual-mode small cell system-on-chip (SoC) products, alongside other members of the award-winning Transcede family.

At MWC, eyeSight Technologies (Hall 5 Stand 5184) will deno the world's first commercial gesture technology to allow users to control digital devices with a fingertip, even from across a room. With eyeSight's camera-based 'fingertip tracking' users can, for the first time, move a cursor simply by pointing their finger directly at the screen, for the ultimate intuitive user experience. Nordic Semiconductor (Hall 6 Stand 6C70) will demo of its sample applications for smartphones, PCs, and tablet computers using its ANT+™ and Bluetooth® Smart wireless connectivity products. The demos will highlight Nordic's solutions in Human Interface Devices (HID) and 'appcessories'.

mimoOn (Hall 2, Stand 2D60) will be showcasing its mi!SmallCellPHY and mi!SmallCellSTACK products. Last week the company had announced that it is supporting the newest generation of Texas Instruments' wireless SoCs, the TCI6636, with its complete range of mi!SmallCell products. The TCI6636 is targeted at ultra-high-capacity small-cell and “green power” macro cell infrastructure applications. The mi!SmallCell product family is planned for availability on the TCI6636 in mid-2013.

Cree and Eta Devices will demonstrate the world's most efficient power amplifier (70%+) for mobile base stations.”Eta Devices' next-generation power amplifiers leverage the performance and reliability advantages of Cree's GaN HEMT RF transistors to realize game-changing efficiency benefits for the mobile base station industry,” said Jim Milligan, business director, Cree RF. “Our transistors have been instrumental in demonstrating Eta Devices' amplifiers, which perform 50 percent more efficiently than the best incumbent silicon power amplifiers currently available in the 4G LTE market.”

Cree and Eta Devices' demonstration of the new power amplifier will take place at the Barcelona Mandarin Oriental on February 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For an invitation to attend the demonstration or to receive additional technical performance information, e-mail

Broadcom (Hall 3 Stand 3C14) will showcase the GNSS location chip with giofence capabilities, which enable always-on, location-aware applications to run while consuming 60x less power. It is claimed that it will open the door for innovative location-based services such as social networking, place-based mobile commerce, and local merchant advertising.

Nujira (Hall 7, stand 7C105) will demo its recently introduced “Woodstock,” a Multi-Mode, Multi-Band ET reference design for 4G smartphone RF front ends, which overcomes the energy efficiency and frequency band challenges faced by the mobile industry since the introduction of 4G. Read mode here.

MWC02

Agilent Technologies (Booth 6D60, Hall 6) will demonstrate its innovative 4G test solutions. Somes demos include of the T4000S series LTE conformance test systems, with inter- and intra-band carrier aggregation, the latest capabilities of Agilent 8960 and PXT wireless communications test sets. Agilent experts will also show how easy and flexible LTE-Advanced signal generation is using Signal Studio software.

RFMD (Hall 2 Stand 2891) will highlight their high-performance 4G LTE solutions, including PowerSmart multimode multi-band (MMMB) power amplifiers, ultra-high-efficiency single-band power amplifiers, discrete switch-based products, antenna control solutions, and complete RF reference design platforms.
