What’s inside: Sony Xperia M5

A teardown of the Sony smartphone.

Japanese maker Sony launched its mid-range “M series” smartphones in 2013, and has since made a number of improvements to each new device. The Sony Xperia M5 is an upgrade from the M4 Aqua, fixing many of the issues there were with the mid-range phone. The M5 offers more storage, more RAM, a higher-spec camera, a sharper screen, and is a great bang for the buck for those looking for a water-resistant phone.

At first glance, the M5 is notable for its rectangular Omnibalance design and thinness. At 145.0 mm long, 72.0 mm wide, 7.6 mm thick, the smartphone features a 5.0-in. IPS LCD touchscreen rendering 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, and is powered by a 2.0 GHz Octa Core CPU. It’s equipped with a microSD that has up to 16 GB of internal storage and 3 GB of RAM space.

One of the largest selling points to the Xperia M5 is that it is waterproof. While this feature isn’t new for the Xperia series, it’s beneficial to see that it is sticking. The Xperia M5 holds an IP65/98 rating, which means it can withstand water jets just as well as full immersion, making it more water resistant than the Samsung Galaxy S7 and its IP68 rating.

The M5 runs on the Android-v5.0 (Lollipop 64bit) and features an accelerometer, ambient light, compass, and proximity. Connectivity options include Bluetooth V4.1 + A2DP, NFC, and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n. It has a 21MP primary camera with 13.1MP secondary camera. Underneath the display panel is a 2600 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Available colors include black, white, and gold. The full teardown report can be found here.
