White LED driver reduces LCD-TV costs

The iW7040 white-LED driver is designed for use with large LCD panels that use an array of LEDs as a backlight source. It can communicate with up to eight external step-up PWM dc/dc converters to drive up to 64 separate strings of multiple series-connected LEDs. The part reduces direct backlit LCD-TV costs by $10 to $15 per TV and makes it easier for TV manufacturers to achieve Energy Star 5.0 requirements by reducing power consumption 5 to 10 W per TV.

Features include an input supply voltage from 10 to 28 V, 64 constant current sink channels with maximum ±2% current matching, PWM dimming range from 1% to 100% with 10-bit resolution, and a PWM dimming frequency from 240 Hz to 19.2 kHz with 7-bit programmability. The LED PWM dimming can be adjusted through a high-bandwidth SPI interface. Housed in an 88-pin QFN package, the iW7040 has multiple features to protect the LED channels from fault conditions.
