Why is the iPhone 8 exploding? Apple investigates defect

Two incidents of the iPhone 8 Plus batteries splitting have been reported; why is this happening?

If you’re waiting to purchase the iPhone X rather than the iPhone 8 Plus, you probably made a sensible decision. Apple is investigating two cases of the iPhone 8 Plus splitting open.

The first case occurred in Taiwan when the user was charging the device and it snapped apart after just three minutes of being hooked up. The second case happened in Japan when a woman received her new phone and discovered that it had separated during transit. Both smartphones were iPhone 8 Pluses and snapped in similar places.

The Japanese phone looked like this:

The Taiwanese phone is below:

The owner of the Taiwanese phone was using the official Apple adapter and cord that the device came with, while the Japanese iPhone arrived in its defect condition. Apple is investigating both situations and has received the Taiwanese device for analysis.

While some reports have referred to this as an explosion, that’s not the proper term. There are two real reasons why this could be occurring. One reason is that the glue used to hold together the phone is weak or not properly applied. Even a tiny amount of shaking or a dropped box could be enough to pop the phone apart. This could also explain why it only impacts a minuscule number of phones, because if everyone was seeing this issue, we would know by now.

Another reason for the phone splitting could be a result of the battery swelling inside the device. While it’s certainly not ideal to have a device with defective components, it’s bound to happen when you buy a product like a complex phone. Additionally, people may be prone to talk about potential defects after the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 kept exploding a year ago.

Regardless of what the issue is, time will tell if it’s widespread or just a few devices. Let’s hope the problem isn’t as extreme as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7, as the company was never fully able to recover from it and sweep it under the rug.
