Wireless baseband processors significantly cut power, cost
The Transcede T4000 and T4020 wireless baseband processors can replace today’s 3G and 4G base station approach that combines a set of general-purpose DSPs and FPGAs with one or more networking processing units. The Transcede devices provide 22 processing elements, including two ARM Cortex A9 multicore processors, 10 CEVA DSPs and 10 DSP accelerators. They support W-CDMA, LTE or WiMax; layers 1, 2, and above.
Transcede devices can enable a $1,000 100-W blade to be replaced with one that takes less than 15 W and costs less than $250. The family’s scalable architecture enables the same software to be used for picocells, microcells, macrocells, and low-cost femtocells. The chips have CPRI/PCIe and sRIO interfaces, plus IEEE 1588 version 2 clock-recovery support. The 600-MHz T4000 takes 12 W typ and supports LTE or WiMAX layers 1 and 2 for three sectors of 10 MHz with 2 x 2 MIMO antennas. The 750-MHz T4020 takes less than 15 W typ and performs similar processing for three sectors of 20 MHz. (Ea/10,000: T4000, $200; T4020, $250 — samples available now; prod qty, 3rd qtr.)
