The Avastar 88W8797 is said to be the industry’s first high-performance 802.11n multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy combination LAN radio SoC. The chip features advanced power management, with a standby current of less than 100 µA, combined with Wi-Fi data rates up to 300 Mbits/s.
The IC’s MIMO configuration with Tx beamforming technology can double performance, enabling high-bandwidth applications regardless of a portable device’s spatial orientation. It is also well suited to other products that require MIMO Wi-Fi performance such as home media servers, notebook computers, set-top-boxes, and digital televisions. The chip also provides FM transmit and receive, and supports the 802.11i security standard through Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)/Counter Mode CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP)/ Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and other mechanisms.
