Housed in a 5-mm2 WLP package, the 1.5-A MAX8834 WLED flash driver IC for camera applications in cellular handsets, integrates an I2C interface, a 5-V PWM dc/dc step-up converter, two 750-mA regulators for movie and flash lighting, and a low-current regulator for driving an indicator LED. The device offers 2- and 4-MHz switching frequency options and MAXFLASH function, which allows the user to program a critical input supply voltage. With MAXFLASH enabled, the part will adaptively reduce the flash current when the critical threshold has been reached.
Two output voltage modes are provided: fixed (3.7 to 5.2 V) mode and adaptive mode. Other features include an optional remote temperature sensor interface, I2 C-programmable safety and watchdog timers, and automatic open/short LED detection. Fault monitors can be read through the I2 C interface to facilitate automated factory testing. Operating from –40° to 85°C, the part is housed in a 20-bump WLP. (From $1.65 ea/1,000 — available now.)
