Xeon server CPUs raise performance marks

Addressing fast growing Internet data traffic, the Xeon E5-2600 64-bit server processor family is said to improve performance/watt by over 50%. The CPU features up to eight cores and a fully integrated PCI Express 3.0 controller. The chips advanced security hardware allows 40 Gbit/s encryption.

The family also supports new Advanced Vector Extension (AVX) instructions that double floating point math performance and Data Direct I/O (DDIO) that allows Ethernet controllers to route traffic directly to processor cache, reducing latency up to 30%. The 15 versions of the chips have four DDR3-1333 memory channels and a maximum TDP of 70 to 135 W. The E5-2620 version with a 15 M cache is slated for embedded designs.
