You’ll soon be able to unlock your MacBook with your iPhone

A touch of the finger could unlock your MacBook.

Since passwords can be rather annoying, especially as we’re constantly required to memorize a dozen different ones, Apple has addressed the issue. The tech giant is working on a feature to allow users unlock their MacBook by scanning their finger on their iPhone’s Touch ID.

Apple alleviates the frustration of typing in multiple passwords by using one unlocked device to open other gadgets automatically. For example, the Apple Watch can be set to unlock an iPhone automatically in the same general vicinity.

The new feature will keep your MacBook unlocked when your unlocked iPhone is near; an Apple Watch-MacBook combination would work similarly. The new functionality is believed to appear in the next version of OS X, 10.12.

Currently, there’s an app called Knock that provides similar functionality, but does require installation on both the Watch and MacBook.

The more obvious answer, of course, would be for Apple to let its users unlock their MacBooks with a fingerprint scanner built right in the next-generation laptops. The company patented the technology years ago, but there is no real indication when it will be implemented.

Another feature Apple enthusiasts can look forward to in the near future is Siri, the company’s voice assistant, making her way to the OS X, backed up by a screenshot icon in the OS X menu bar.

Apple is scheduled to preview OS X 10.12 during its WWDC developer conference in June. The new version of OS X is expected to launch in the fall.
