Simband is Samsung’s idea of wearable technology designed to keep your body’s health in check as part of its Digital Health Initiative. This technology will be an open data system with open sensor platforms that can analyze your vital signs and run a brief diagnosis on your body’s heart rate and electrical connectivity.

Although Samsung has not yet announced which sensors it will integrate into its wristbands, it is speculated that many intricate sensors will be implemented. The sensors could include multiple photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensors for measuring blood pressure and heart rate; Bioimpedance sensors to observe blood flow and body fat; electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors for analyzing rate and stability of heartbeat, and estimating blood pressure; galvanic skin response (GSR) sensors to measure electrical conductivity of the skin to monitor stress levels; and temperature sensors that will use algorithms to calculate body temperature.

All of the aforementioned technology will provide patients with 24/7 insight on their health stats. The Simband could potentially be equipped with a magnetic battery charger that would attach to the gadget and the wearer at all times.

Using Samsung Architecture Multimodal Interactions (SAMI), this wearable tech will be able to upload data to a cloud for specialists to research, hone the data, and develop more advanced applications. The device’s open APIs allow it to grab data from any gadget or online device and use it for the purpose of analysis.

For this project, Samsung is partnering with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to develop the Digital Health Innovation Lab. To integrate proper sensors, IMEC has joined with Samsung to produce an open reference design for sensor modules. Simband technology is anticipated to be available by the end of the year.
