Nexperia creates new application-specific FET category

Nexperia has created a new category of MOSFETs, called application-specific FET, or ASFET, with optimized features for specific applications.

Nexperia has defined a new MOSFET product group, called application-specific FET (ASFET) that feature MOSFETs with optimized parameters for specific applications. By focusing on individual applications, specific MOSFET parameters can be tailored for the application to deliver performance improvements.

ASFET familiesNexperia application-specific FET are available for battery isolation, motor control, hot-swap, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) and power sourcing applications. Each family offers tailored performance improvements based on the application. One example includes a 3× to 5× improvement in safe operating area (SOA) for hot-swap applications, such as always-on rack-based computers, communications, and storage systems. For DC motor control, the optimized MOSFET can handle a current drain of up to 300 A in a power-SO8 package that provides protection during high-torque start-ups or fault conditions.

“There are 100+ parameters on a regular MOSFET datasheet but usually only a few are critical in each project,” said Chris Boyce, senior director for the Power MOSFETs Group at Nexperia, in a statement. “As designers push the boundaries of performance, it is crucial to understand how the MOSFET will be used in the application. However, as the applications change, so do the critical parameters.”

The company plans to expand the application-specific FET series with a new family of automotive products with guaranteed repetitive avalanche performance for driving inductive loads. Other developments are in the pipeline.

Earlier this year, Nexperia introduced tiny MOSFETS, targeting mobile and portable applications, that are 36% smaller than previous-generation devices with the lowest RDS(on).
