Ericsson has launched a new two-phase 90A 3E* digital point-of-load (POL) DC/DC power module that offers compensation-free performance and the ability to easily connect modules in parallel to provide up to 360A to advanced network-processors that require high performance in power delivery and high levels of software control to improve flexibility. These advanced capabilities make the BMR465 ready for future Software-Defined Power Architecture (SDPA) systems, which power system architects foresee as the way forward to achieving highly efficient and energy-optimized network architectures by 2020. www.ericsson.com/powermodules
A new expanded line of extended temperature (ET) mid-voltage MOSFETs from Fairchild help customers achieve high power density in high-temperature designs. The devices are rated at 175° C to deliver new levels of energy efficiency for smaller, more reliable high-speed solutions. Ultimately, the higher operating temperatures allow up to 85% greater power density and up to 3X more reliability than MOSFETs rated to the 150° C industry standard. The family includes 19 new devices, available in both 5 mm x 6 mm (Power56) and 3 mm x 3 mm (Power33) standard packages, as well as the new TO-Leadless (TO-LL) 9.8 x 11.7 mm package. The devices are offered in a wide range of voltage ratings, including 30, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 150 V. They are ideal for end systems that must function in high ambient temperatures. The substantially greater reliability of the devices is an advantage for products used in harsh environments, including avionics, railway and power tool applications. Applications also include high density dc/dc converters, high density ac/dc converters and high density motor drive circuits incorporated in multi-kW power supplies, solar micro inverters, forklifts, agricultural equipment and small form factor ac/dc adapters. ON Semiconductor is showcasing some of its latest advances in power management technology at APEC including a new LLC current-mode power supply for computers and LED TVs, significant developments in GaN, and a sensor-less motor driver controller. One of the demonstrations will include the industry’s first current-mode LLC controller, the NCP1399, highlighting the safety features and benefits inherent to a current-mode control approach. The power supply reference design will incorporate the NCP1399 along with ON Semiconductor’s NCP4810 X2 capacitor discharger, NCP1602 power factor controller, and NCP4305 synchronous rectification controller. This system solution is predominantly aimed at power supplies for all-in-one computers and large LED TVs, as well as ultra-high density power adapters. It is capable of achieving markedly higher performance, lower standby power and higher power conversion efficiency levels than would be possible using competitive devices. The current-mode control architecture of the NCP1399 is the heart of the power supply reference design bringing built-in protection features, faster transient response and light load efficiency enhancements. The NCP4305 provides improved efficiency with a large 8 A driver and built-in light load detection. ON also introduced a converter with GaN high-electron-mobility transistors. The two-stage converter is a 240-W supply achieves 95% peak efficiency with the NCP1397 LLC controller, NCP1654 power factor correction controller, and TPH3202PS or NTP8G202N GaN transistor switching devices. The board uses GaN HEMTs in both the PFC stage and in the primary side of the LLC stage. The company also introduced an automotive motor driver. The motor driver demonstration showcases a next generation software-less automotive motor driver solution, LV8907. On-chip intelligent sensor-less commutation logic enables LV8907 to drive a brushless dc (BLDC) motor without any position sensor, thereby reducing the solution cost and footprint. This software-less solution with on-chip configuration registers can be customized for a wide range of motor and load combinations using an easy-to-use and free graphical user interface (GUI) utility.
Powervation presents intelligent digital power solutions for high-performance computing and communications infrastructure. The various digital single- and multi-phase synchronous buck PWM controllers and integrated digital switchers target SMBus/PMBus and VR12.5/VR13 SVID applications that power DDR, FPGA/ASIC, low-power processors, and general POL needs. The digital products feature xTune, an adaptive compensation and auto-tuning architecture, which delivers faster transient performance and greatly simplifies the design process and time-to-market. This is a key benefit for various applications such as server, high-end motherboards, networking and telecom design, and stand-alone dc/dc power modules where such designs require high-performance transient response, the ability to drive unknown or variable output loads, and/or benefit from a reduction in the time required to characterize and optimize the voltage regulator.
